Why business owners are switching from custom to theme-based website development

Wondering about the changing trends and the ever-raging debate on custom website development vs theme? Check out some expert insights!

Why business owners are switching from custom to theme-based website development

As a project manager with a strong technical background, working with a diverse and valued clientele (both brands and businesses), I have seen a major shift in website development preferences over the past lustrum.

In the past year, over 60% of clients chose theme-based development, compared with those who insisted on custom work.

The truth is that the reason behind this shift is not limited to speed. It can also be attributed to an interplay of factors, such as stability, scalability, and the ability to focus on what truly moves the needle for a business.

In today’s blog, I, Pritpal Singh, Project Manager at Mavlers, will be spilling the beans and sharing real-world, practical insights on the implications and intricacies of custom builds and theme-based projects, the importance of this shift in preferences, and instances where going with a custom build might still be the right choice.

Understanding the beauty of custom builds ~ Can be robust but still prone to chaos

Honestly, custom development sounds attractive because it promises uniqueness and complete control. But in reality, it might become a breeding ground for:

  1. Possibility of unclear requirements

Custom work usually evolves as the project moves forward, making it hard to freeze the scope and timeline.

    2. Longer development and QA cycles

Every feature is built from scratch. Every element needs fresh UI, backend logic, and testing.

      3. Higher risk of technical debt

Custom code created under deadline pressure may lead to future maintenance hiccups.

        4. Frequent dependency on senior developers

When the code is unique, only certain team members can handle or extend it.

As a project manager, this means more time managing back-and-forth discussions, aligning expectations, handling risk escalations, and managing change requests.

The intricacies of theme-based website development ~ Prioritizing the harmony every delivery team needs

Theme-based website development flips the script. The foundation is already built, tested, and proven. We will now delve into what I’ve repeatedly seen with clients who choose theme-based builds:

          1. Faster delivery

So, a theme renders a pre-made structure for layout, navigation, mobile responsiveness, and core UI pieces. My role becomes more about configuration and content setup rather than reinventing the wheel.

          2. Consistent quality

Themes are built after multiple iterations and community testing. This translates into fewer bugs, fewer UAT surprises, and smoother go-lives.

          3. Lower costs and better budget control

When clients select themes, we can almost always commit to more precise, sharper timelines and fixed pricing, which builds trust and reduces stress on both sides.

          4. More work and repeat clients

Interestingly, the clients who choose theme-based projects often come back faster with additional work because they:

          • save money on the first project
          • get their website live sooner
          • see ROI earlier
          • seek enhancements, landing pages, integrations, or new features once the main site is performing

This is precisely why I’ve noticed that clients with theme-based projects generate more work over time than those with custom builds. They move quickly, execute faster, and they rely on us repeatedly because delivery is predictable.

Understanding why this shift matters all the more today

In 2026, digital presence is far from a luxury and more of a necessity. Most businesses cannot afford a 4-6 month custom build unless there’s a very specific need.

Speed to market is literally everything.

As a project manager, I’ve learned that my job isn’t just to deliver what clients want, it’s to guide them to what will help their business grow. Theme-based development does exactly that.

When custom website development might still be the right fit for your business

There are situations where custom builds win, such as:

          • Complex platforms with unique workflows
          • Heavy integrations
          • Multi-user portals
          • Startups with specific IP or product logic

But these are exceptions, not the everyday business website.

          The road ahead

In summary, after managing dozens of projects, my perspective is clear: custom projects offer artistic freedom, but theme-based projects offer business freedom.
